Free online program teaches how to build a game in JavaScript

Google offers HTML5 dev course on Udacity

Google has launched a new free HTML5 game development course on web education portal Udacity.

The new program on the online learning site will focus on building a game in JavaScript, and is taught by Google Chrome developer relations duo Colt McAnlis (pictured) and Peter Lubbers as well as Udacity architect Sean Bennett.

The course is designed to walk developers through the major components of building a HTML5, using GRITS as an example. The course will also talk through standard development techniques to help create “high performance” applications.

The syllabus also coveres Canvas rendering, basic input, handling events, entity hierarchy, Box2D, adding sound and asynchronous loading.

The program, announced in October last year, will begin on February 14th, where a live introductory session will be hosted by Google to tell developers about the details of the course.

A study group will be hosted at Google’s San Francisco office to run alongside the first several weeks of the course, in which learners will be given various course materials and advice on HTML5 development. These sessions will also be recorded for those who cannot attend in person.

As well as running the course, Udacity has also organised a competition for ‘students’ to developer their own games using the skills they have learnt from the course.
