League of Legends is "the most played video game in the world"

Riot Games has released an infographic claiming that its free-to-play online RPG is the most played video game in the world”.

It has a total of 70m registered Summoner names, 32m active monthly users and 12m daily active users. Over 1bn game hours are logged every month.

To put that into perspective, World of Warcraft has a total player base of 12m and Xbox Live has 40m subscribers. With regard to DAUs, Instagram has 12m while Activision’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has only” 3.3m.

League of Legends’ peak concurrent players stand at 3m. This compares to 1.4m for Modern Warfare 3 (on Xbox 360) and 650k on Steam.

It also points out that Gangnam Style has 1.4m Facebook likes. League of Legends has 4.1m.
