iPhone 5 registers 2m pre-orders in one day

Apple has stated that it received over two million pre-orders for the iPhone 5 in its first 24 hours of availability.

That’s double the one million pre-orders won by the iPhone 4S in its first 24 hours and over triple the 600,000 day one iPhone 4 pre-orders.

The handset is released in key global territories on September 21st, though many mobile firms are now reporting delays of several weeks for those who have yet to pre-order their device.

"iPhone 5 pre-orders have shattered the previous record held by iPhone 4S and the customer response to iPhone 5 has been phenomenal,” Apple’s senior VP of worldwide marketing Philip Schiller stated."iPhone 5 is the best iPhone yet, the most beautiful product we’ve ever made, and we hope customers love it as much as we do.”

Critics greeted last week’s iPhone 5 reveal with an air of disappointment, due to its functional and aesthetic similarity to the iPhone 4S.

However, it will be consumers who ultimately decide its fate and early indications are certainly very strong.
