'Rooting the device won't give you any more access to the software', claims Julie Uhrman

Ouya founder defends security of open console

Upcoming hackable console Ouya will be as secure as other Android devices, claims the system’s founder.

Speaking to Eurogamer, Julie Uhrman responded to concerns that games on the console would be easy to pirate by insisting it would be safe for developers.

She added that as all paid content on the device would require authentication, there was an extra element of security integrated into the platform to help prevent piracy.

“OUYA will be just as secure as any other Android-powered device,” said Uhrman.

“In fact, because all the paid content will require authentication with OUYA’s servers, we have an added layer of security. Hacking and openness are about getting what you want to do with the hardware. Rooting the device won’t give you any more access to the software.”

Ouya shot to prominence last week after it launched its record-breaking Kickstarter campaign, which has raised almost $5m with 22 days left to go.
