Game creator Jordan Mechner recovers long lost game files

Prince of Persia source code released

The long lost Prince of Persia source code has been successfully recovered and released by the game’s creator, Jordan Mechner.

The 3.5" floppy disks were recently discovered by Mechner’s father, who wrote the music for the game.

Gamasutra now reports the source code has been released- twenty years after the game’s creation.

Mechner had given up hope of ever finding the disks, but with the help of digital historian Jason Scott, Apple II collector Tony Diaz, and the makers of Disc Ferret, the data has been transferred to a more modern system by the aid of a custom software setup.

The source code is available here, with the recovery process documented on Scott’s flickr..

"We extracted and posted the 6502 code because it was a piece of computer history that could be of interest to others, and because if we hadn’t, it might have been lost for all time," said Mechner.

"As for me, it’s time to get back to my day job of making new games and making up stories."
