Apple App Store passes 25bn downloads

At some point in the early hours of Sunday morning the 25 billionth app was downloaded from the Apple App Store.

The milestone is passed as the App Store reaches the ripe old age of three years and seven months, having launched alongside the iPhone 3G back in 2008.

Since then it has grown to offer over 500,000 different apps and, to its credit, has become one of the most disruptive services in modern gaming and computing.

Amongst its achievements are the re-birth of indie gaming, a spreading of games to a wider world than ever before and a big blow to the full price retail games model.

One as-of-yet unnamed iOS owners will have downloaded the 25 billionth app and is in line to receive a $10,000 iTunes voucher.
