2017 iPhone will have curved edge display, reports claim

Next month’s iPhone 7 reveal is expected to have little in the way of surprise, but 2017 sounds as if it could be a totally different story.

Nikkei Asian Review reports that three handsets are already being lined up for 2017 – one with a 4.7 inch screen, one with a 5.5 inch screen and a third with a 5.5 inch or bigger OLED display that is curved on two sides. This of course mimics the design pioneered by Samsung with its Galaxy Edge range.

It is also said that Apple will ditch metal casings for its 2017 handsets in favour of glass covers either side of a metal bezel.

Note that Samsung will apparently be the supplier of Apple’s new bent display.

More recent reports have suggested that Apple has decided to drop a planned third handset from its iPhone 7 reveal next month, opting instead to go with two models. One will follow Apple’s new standard ‘mid-size’ template while the other will very closely resemble the current iPhone 6 Plus, albeit with an improved twin-lens camera that was previously planned for the now scrapped high-end SKU.

The ubiquitous 3.5mm headphone jack is expected to be dropped, while a new pressure-sensitive home button will be added.
