AMD’s Mantle misses 2013 release

As is now clearly apparent, AMD’s supposedly game-changing PC API Mantle has missed its 2013 release.

Mantle is a Direct X alternative that will allow developers to more directly access PC AMD hardware, offering improved levels of performance for components such as AMD’s Radeon graphics cards.

Mantle was initially supposed to arrive alongside Battlefield 4 at the beginning of November. When that failed to materialise, Mantle was given a December 2013 release date.

After much consideration, the decision was made to delay the Mantle patch for Battlefield 4,” AMD confirmed. AMD continues to support DICE on the public introduction of Mantle, and we are tremendously excited about the coming release for Battlefield 4.

We are now targeting a January release and will have more information to share in the New Year.”

An AMD rep subsequently confirmed to Polygon that the delay is down to EA’s ongoing efforts to stabilise DICE’s troubled shooter, which is sapping all of the studio’s available development resource.

Said the rep: "The cause of the delay is due to EA’s recent decision to halt game development in favour of bug stomping."
