Assassin’s Creed Odyssey comes to Switch, but with caveats

Nintendo has partnered with Ubisoft to continue its experiments into the world of cloud streaming games, with Assassin’s Creed Odyssey coming to Switch – though only in Japan.

The game as-is simply wouldn’t run on Nintendo’s hybrid console without serious cutbacks, but utilising game streaming tech – and a stable, fast internet connection – Switch owners will be able to play the game in almost perfect quality.

Options for how to pay for it are another area of experimentation, as revealed over on Gamespot, with the choice being between a ¥730 (£5) pass which allows a day of play, or a ¥8,400 (£57) two-year pass – allowing you more than enough time to play through the whole thing.

The ‘cloud version’, as it’s officially know, of Odyssey was announced during a Japanese episode of Nintendo Direct, which you can watch here. It’s not the first time a big release that’s too technically advanced for the Switch has come out with via a streaming option: Capcom brought Resident Evil 7 to the machine earlier this year with similar split price options.

Hopes for the service to spread elsewhere have been dashed for the time being, though, with Assassin’s Creed Odyssey said to be a limited release. It’s only coming to Japan, then – but it gives hope for future options of how to play things should the cloud versions do well over there, and it gives developers different avenues to explore when it comes to cramming their triple-A releases onto the technically inferior Switch.
