Now MW2 smashes week-one sales record

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has smashed the week-one sales record for video games in the UK.

According to figures from ELSPA/GfK-ChartTrack, the title sold a whopping 1.78 million units in its first five days on sale – as predicted by MCV.

The title grossed 67.4 million – just over the 64 million we forecast.

The figures dwarf those of the previous record holder – Rockstar’s GTA IV.

The news comes after Modern Warfare 2 set a new first-day UK sales record of an estimated 1.23 million units – grossing around 48 million.

Director General of the Entertainment and Leisure Software Publishers Association (ELSPA) Michael Rawlinson said: These figures tell a clear story. The video games industry is now an established part of the mainstream entertainment mix.

Whilst the launch of Modern Warfare 2 has indeed been extraordinary, it is indicative of the growing popularity of video games. One in three people in the UK now play video games regularly.”
