PS4 to support external hard drives in 4.50 software update

The PS4 will soon support external hard drives, Sony announced today. In the console’s next 4.50 software update (code-named Sasuke), Sony said PS4 users will be able to upgrade their machine’s storage even further by plugging in a USB 3.0 HDD.

The update will allow for external HDDs up to 8TB in size and users will be able to download and install applications directly to the device. These will then appear in the Content Launcher on the Home Screen, making it easy to keep track of which apps you’ve launched recently. Meanwhile, save files can be managed through the regular settings menu.

Other new features in the update include the ability to set custom wallpapers to the PS4’s home screen, such as screenshots you’ve taken in-game. Users will also be able to edit their screenshots using ShareFactory’s Photo Mode to make them even more unique.

The PS4 Quick Menu is also due to receive a number of improvements, such as quick access to certain Party features without having to open the separate Party app. The Quick Menu will also use less space onscreen.

The Notification list is being streamlined as well. Whereas before all the tabs appeared on the left hand side of the screen, they’ll now appear as a simplified list, making it easier to see them all at a glance. The Notification settings will also be accessible from the Options Menu, allowing users to turn off or customise which pop-up notifications appear onscreen.

There’s also good news for those who own a PSVR and have a large 3D Blu-ray collection, as the 4.50 update will allow PSVR users to enjoy 3D movies in full stereoscopic 3D directly through the headset.

The new features are available today for PS4 users in the beta program, but its official roll-out date will be revealed in the coming weeks.
