Sonic CD gets digital re-release

Sega has confirmed the news accidentally leaked by Microsoft earlier this week that it is to re-release Sonic CD.

The game was originally released for Sega’s ill-fated Mega Drive expansion the Mega CD in 1993. It’s generally regarded as one of the strongest instalments in the classic platforming series.

Now Sonic CD is coming to Xbox Live Arcade, PSN, iOS, Android, Windows Phone and PC later this year.

Sega’s decision to refer to it as the beloved prequel to Sonic the Hedgehog Episode 4” and include the Japanese rather than the US soundtrack has, predictably, sent the Sonic fanboy fraternity into a rage.

Everyone else is just pleased to see the title get a stab at winning the widespread love it deserves.

Ask any Sonic fan to name their favourite games, and Sonic CD always ranks near the top of their lists,” Sega’s VP of digital business Haruki Satomi said.

Sonic CD marks an important chapter in Sonic’s history, bridging the gap between his oldest adventures and his new digital exploits like Sonic The Hedgehog 4 Episode I. We’ve made sure the re-mastered edition has everything that Sonic fans want to see with all of the original colourful classic zones.”

The release also seems to point to a 2012 arrival for the long awaited Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode 2.
