Witcher 3 dev: DirectX 12 won’t help 1080p on Xbox One

Microsoft’s implementation of DirectX 12 is unlikely to aid developers trying to get 1080p performance out of their titles on Xbox One.

That’s according to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’s lead engine programmer Balazs Torok who told GamingBolt that while it will bring some benefits, resolution increase is unlikely to be one of them.

I think there is a lot of confusion around what and why DX12 will improve,” he said. Most games out there can’t go 1080p because the additional load on the shading units would be too much. For all these games DX12 is not going to change anything.

They might be able to push more triangles to the GPU but they are not going to be able to shade them, which defeats the purpose. I think we will see a change in the way graphics programmers will think about their pipelines and this will result in much better systems hopefully.”

In February Rebellion’s Jean-Baptiste Bolcato was more optimistic of Microsoft’s 1080p aspirations on Xbox One, saying: They are releasing a new SDK that’s much faster and we will be comfortably running at 1080p on Xbox One. We were worried six months ago and we are not anymore, it’s got better and they are quite comparable machines.

And Bungie has also previously stated that Microsoft’s freeing up of the previously compulsory processing resources allocated to Kinect has helped Destiny achieve 1080p on the machine.
