Cousens backs up PSP2 power claims

Earlier this month MCV revealed that Sony is touting the PSP2 to publishers as being "as powerful as the PS3". Many scoffed at the claims, but one industry veteran has backed them up.

Speaking to Eurogamer, Codemasters CEO Rod Cousens stated: "You’re going to have statements, which are already out in the press, saying PlayStation Portable 2 is as powerful as the PS3 – which is true.

"We’re at the tip of the iceberg [of portable gaming]. You’re going to get mobile devices as powerful as what were considered notebooks. I just think it gets bigger."

Meanwhile, some sections of the internet became very excited overnight following the emergence of what some are claiming to be a new official shot of the final PSP2 design.

However, a closer look at a larger version of the image suggests that it’s nothing more than a picture of the (still unannounced) PlayStation Phone with some extras Photoshopped onto the top. Note the disparity between the blurred d-dap and buttons and the far sharper analogue nubs.

PSP2 will be announced by Sony at its Tokyo press gathering on Thursday morning.
