Cuphead sells 1m in two weeks, but only around 400,000 on Xbox

Xbox console exclusive Cuphead has sold over a million copies in just two weeks, Studio MDHR has announced. Released on September 29th for Xbox One, Windows 10 and Steam, the 30s animation-style run and gun title received rave reviews from both critics and fans alike, and had been much hyped by Microsoft in the run-up to launch.

It’s an excellent performance for the studio’s debut title, and Microsoft will no doubt be pleased to finally have a successful console exclusive to bolster its line-up in the run-up to Christmas.

However, based on numbers from SteamSpy, it would appear the greater victory has gone to Steam rather than Microsoft, as SteamSpy currently estimates the game has at least 600,000 owners. That leaves roughly just 400,000 sales from the Xbox Store. Of course, 400,000 is nothing to sniff at, but Microsoft would have no doubt been hoping for a bigger slice of the pie given its huge marketing push.

"Cuphead has only been out for two weeks and we never could have dreamed of the reception we’ve received from our amazing fans," Chad and Jared Moldenhauer wrote on Studio MDHR’s website.

"Today, we wanted to take a moment to thank each and every one of you for your support and we’re excited to share that Cuphead has gone platinum with over 1 million units sold! We have worked tirelessly over the past few years to deliver a game that remained true to our vision and we are both humbled and excited that so many people from around the world are playing Cuphead – it truly makes it all worth it. From all of us at StudioMDHR, thanks again for your support."
