E3 2012: Square Enix reveals next-gen game engine

Square Enix has shown off the technology that will power its next-generation of video games.

The engine is called Luminous Studio, and it offers a depth of visual detail never before seen – even in high-end PCs.

Demonstrating the tech was a demo called Agni’s Philosophy, based in the Final Fantasy universe but seemingly not tied to an existing or upcoming FF product.

The short was demonstrated in real-time and offered visual effects that easily matched the level of detail we’re used to seeing in Square Enix’s amazing pre-rendered videos.

The Luminous Studio game engine aims to bring about greater productivity within game production teams, while simultaneously offering an environment to create games of fantastic quality,” a press statement reads.

Furthermore, the Luminous Studio game engine is planned to support game consoles, PC, smartphones, and the web, encapsulating the many platforms of the next generation of quality.”
