GMA 2011: Colin Campbell named Games Media Legend

Colin Campbell was named Games Media Legend at last night’s Games Media Awards.

An epic preamble from other Games Media Legend Patrick Garratt heralded Campbell’s appearance on stage – and rightly so: Campbell was Garratt’s first boss.

Campbell’s career began 25 years ago as a staff writer on CTW, before joining Future to work on a string of titles, including Commodore Format and Amiga Power.

He also became publisher of Future’s console mags, including Edge, Sega Power and GamesMaster. He also launched Official PlayStation Magazine.

Since that time he’s worked as editor-in-chief of Next Generation Online and IGN, written for The Guardian, launched Official Xbox Magazine, and worked for Intent Media and Gamasutra. He is currently head of news and features at IGN in San Francisco.

Previous individuals to be named Games Media Legend include Steve Jarratt, Gary Penn and Patrick Garratt. Last year PC Zone was given a post-humous Games Media Legend prize to celebrate the closed magazine’s illustrious (and at times notorious) history.

The Games Media Awards are hosted every year by Intent Media, the publisher of leading trade publications MCV and Develop.

Grainger Games was headline sponsor. Trion Games sponsored the pre-event party, and Namco Bandai sponsored the after-party, during which Rockaoke was presented by We Sing (Nordic Games).

Gold partners were Xbox 360 (Microsoft), Codemasters, Battlefield 3 (EA), PS Vita (Sony), Ubisoft, Super Mario (Nintendo) and OnLive.

Silver partners were Namco Bandai and Capcom (sponsors of the after-party), Trion Worlds (pre-drinks event sponsor), Gamescom and We Sing (Nordic Games) which sponsored the after-event bandaoke.

PES 2012 (Konami), Sonic Generations (Sega), NC Soft, Rising Star Games, Green Man Gaming, The Games Tribe, The Darkness II (2K Games) and Venatus Media each sponsored individual awards.
