JAPAN: Low interest in 3D TV

A survey conducted by Kakaku.com in Japan paints a worrying picture for the prospects of 3D TV in the region, Reuters reports.

67.4 per cent of those questioned claimed to have no interest in buying a 3D TV. Of those, 70 per cent blamed the need to wear special 3D glasses, 57 per cent lamented the high price of 3D TVs and 40 per cent cited the current lack of 3D content.

The news may be of even greater concern for publisher as Japan has a tradition of eagerly embracing cutting-edge technology very early on in its lifecycle.

Television makers’ expectations for 3D are high but looking at the degree of interest among consumers, there is a big gap with the enthusiasm of manufacturers,” the head of Kakaku.com’s media-creative team Tsuyoshi Kamada stated.
