UK games market returns to growth in September

5.17m boxed games were sold in the UK last month, as the games industry returned to growth for the first time in years.

45 per cent more games were sold in September 2013 compared with the same month a year before, according to GfK Chart-Track.

Grand Theft Auto V is almost solely responsible for the spike, with Rockstar’s game accounting for 52 per cent of games sold last month. GTA V has already sold over 2.6m copies in the UK.

In total, stores generated 187.2m in September, which also saw the release of FIFA 14. For the first nine months of the year, UK games stores generated more revenue from software than it did during the first nine months of 2012.
