Google introduces a subscription service to rid the internet of advertising

So web ads annoy you? Do they annoy you enough to make you cough up a subscription to use the internet?

Google has unveiled a new service called ‘Contributor by Google’. There’s little in the way of actual information, although the service’s website asks: Today’s Internet is mostly funded by advertising. But what if there were a way to directly support the people who create the sites you visit each day?”

Users will be asked to ‘contribute’ between $1-$3 per month, part of which will go to the website in question, with the rest presumably going to Google. The same functions are offered no matter how much you pay – the amount simply determines how much partner sites receive.

When visiting a site ads will be replaced with either a pixel pattern or a thank you message.

Those on board include The Onion, Mashable, Imgur, Urban Dictionary, Science Daily and WikiHow, although Google suggests these are just a few” of its confirmed partners.
