HMV seeks in-house digital games service

HMV has told MCV it is hoping to develop an in-house digital distribution service for games.

The firm has just launched a music downloads service thanks to its acquisition of digital delivery specialists 7digital – and keen to introduce other formats to its downloadable offering.

Speaking to MCV after its entertainment conference, CEO Simon Fox said: We’ve thought about digital games a lot.

It’d be very easy for us to just add a white label service, which is what some of our competitors have done, but we don’t really think that will take us forward. We’re trying to avoid doing it in a ‘me too’ way.”

Fox also claimed that games will be instrumental to HMV’s brand strategy going forwards.
