HMV’s iconic Oxford Street store closes

The retailer’s flagship store closes its doors today for the last time after 30 years.

HMV’s 150 Oxford Street store had been the world’s biggest music store, but new owner Hilco has opted to close the site in favour of a smaller location, which will be based at 363 Oxford Street.

The famous store will now become a Sport Direct branch after the sports retailer acquired the license to the 60,000 sq ft location.

The decision to close HMV Oxford Street follows the retailer’s slip into administration early last year, which saw a total of 103 stores across the UK shut down.

In the wake of the closure, HMV’s Stratford store has become the brand’s new flagship store, hosting the majority of the retailer’s games launches and events.
