iOS 4.1 goes live but death grip scandal rumbles on

Apple’s first attempt to address the iPhone 4’s reception problems is here with news that the iOS 4.1 firmware update is now live and ready to download.

As previously explained, the ‘fix’ takes the remarkable step of enlarging the bars used to display signal strength. It does not, however, seem to make much difference to the phone’s ongoing reception problems.

Furthermore, rumours from The New York Times claim that internal rumblings are now pointing to a further software problem that is thought to be a major contributor to the issue. NYT even goes as far to suggest that a second firmware fix could be in the pipeline that could hopefully eradicate the issue for good.

Meanwhile, rumours persist that Apple is already silently recalling the iPhone 4 by replacing existing units with a new version that has a different finish applied to the controversial antenna as well as a physical adjustment to the proximity sensor.

Give it a few months and we’ll have a far better idea whether the iPhone 4 ‘death grip’ scandal is a major turning point in Apple’s history or an example of the modern tech media spiralling out of control, but for now all eyes are focused on tonight’s press conference scheduled for 18:00BST.
