iPhone jailbreak team backs down

Having opened up the world of iPhone jailbreaking to a whole new audience earlier this month, Dev-Team has confirmed that it will not be releasing an updated version designed to work with the latest 4.0.2 iPhone firmware.

Currently the jamilbreakme.com hack works with all firmware up to 4.1. All a user has to do to use it is head over to the website via their iPhone’s browser and swipe a button.

However, Apple recently released an updated version of its iOS4 designed specifically to close the loophole that Dev-Team had discovered.

Jailbreakme v2.0 was a great success, and it’s provided a nice levelling point for all jailbreakers and unlockers on all devices at firmware versions less than 4.0.2/3.2.2,” the Dev-Team blog reads.

We hope that everybody ever interested in jailbreaks or unlocks was able to join in on the jailbreakme bonanza. Now it’s a few weeks later and Apple has closed the jailbreakme.com hole. So now, people will begin to ask: will there be a jailbreak for devices that shipped with 4.0.2 out of the box?

No, there won’t be. Firmware 4.0.2 was *only* released to fix the jailbreakme hole. With firmware 4.1 still in it beta stages, it makes no sense to escalate the cat and mouse” with Apple for firmware updates that only fix the jailbreak holes. To quote WOPR [War Operation Plan Response], the only winning move is not to play”.
