iPhone out-numbers DS and PSP

As part of its OS4 presentation in the US tonight, Apple has taken time to highlight one fight that it can never be accused of losing – the numbers game.

Apple’s senior vice president of software Scott Forstall pointed out that there are currently 50,000 games and entertainment apps available on the App Store. In contrast, there are currently 4,231 games available for DS and just 2,477 for PSP.

Gaming is extremely popular on the iPhone and iPod touch,” Forstall claimed. We have over 50,000 titles. Let’s look at the competition. If you look at dedicated gaming devices like the PSP and DS, this just blows them out of the water.”

The tech firm also confirmed that it has now sold 450k iPads since the tablet device went on sale in the US at the weekend. iPad users have already downloaded 3.5m apps and 600k e-books.

As for the App Store, that now houses over 185k apps, with total downloads having now passed an incredible 4bn. iPhone and iPod Touch sales have now surpassed 85m units worldwide.
