Japan: PSP on the surge

The persistent selling power of Square Enix’ Final Fantasy franchise has helped Sony’s portable whiz kid the PSP surge to the top of the hardware sales charts in Japan, according to sales date from Media Create.

Gamesindustry reports that in its first week on sale Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core shot straight to the top of the Japanese charts with sales of 487,000 – taking with it the PSP. With sales of 95,487, the PSP managed to outsell every other machine on the market – including the DS and PSP.

Elsewhere in Japan, the PS3 continues to be outsold by PS2, albeit by a minute margin, and two new Pokemon titles, Pokemon Fushigi no Dungeon: Toki no Tankentai and Pokemon Fushigi no Dungeon: Yami no Tankentai, entered the software charts in second and third place.

The hardware figures in full:

1. PlayStation Portable: 95,487
2. Nintendo DS: 79,974
3. Nintendo Wii: 26,181
4. PlayStation 2: 13,128
5. PlayStation 3: 13,101
6. Xbox 360: 1243
7. Game Boy Advance: 836
8. Nintendo GameCube: 97
