Japanese developer Cygames sponsors fighting game players

Over at GDC Japanese mobile game developer Cygames announced that it has sponsored three of the biggest names in fighting games.

Cygames has quickly risen through the mobile game ranks in Japan, becoming one of the biggest publishers in the market. They now have so much disposable cash that they have decided to throw some of it towards eSports.

The company has sponsored Daigo Umehara, Darryl "Snake Eyez" Lewis and Eduardo "PR Balrog" Pérez. All three of these players can be considered to be in the top 20 in the world of Street Fighter V.

This is a big move from the company, that now has links to some of the best players in the world. Of course this is just a sponsorship and they have not signed the players to a team, so we won’t be seeing Cygames themselves winning anything anytime soon, but it is a massive first step.

With investment seemingly coming from everywhere, including ELEAGUE and Echo Fox to name just a few, this year the fighting game community looks set to explode. We can’t wait for Evo to roll around.
