Kickstarter pledges pass $1 billion

The total amount of money pledged on Kickstarter since its inception on April 28th 2009 has now passed $1bn.

On its first day 40 people pledged $1,084 to seven projects. By September 2011 total pledges had reached $98,637,926. The booming popularity of the service means that over half of its total life revenue raised has been pledged in the last year alone.

In total 5,708,578 individuals from 224 countries have pledged, with US citizens leading the way and accounting for almost two thirds of the total – $663,316,496. IT’s followed by the UK ($54,427,475), Canada ($44,913,678), Australia ($31,776,566) and Germany ($21,607,047).

1,689,979 people have backed more than one project and 15,932 people have backed more than 50 projects. A total of $619m has been pledged by returning backers.

March 13th 2013 saw more pledges than any other day, with 54,187 backers pledging $4,029,585.45 to 1,985 projects. Wednesday is the most popular day for backers.

Games was the most popular category in terms of dollars raised, hitting $215.75m, of which $189.84m was pledged to successful projects
