melty eSport Club shuts down after heavy investment in French eSports

French eSports organisation melty has closed its doors after increased investment in the French scene priced them out of the market.

Traditionally melty eSport Club was a smaller player in the eSports world, although a strong European Overwatch team established them as a bigger organisation over the course of this year.

At the time of closure the organisation also had a CS:GO team, a League of Legends team and players in Hearthstone, FIFA and a few fighting games, including Wilfried "Will2Pac" Jean-Baptiste who is ranked as the 33rd best Street Fighter V player in the world.

melty eSports Club is forced to bow out [of eSports],” said the announcement, which was translated from French. Industry consolidation and financial bidding affecting eSports in French and international level in recent months have led to an explosion of costs related to the development of mentoring and coaching a club with ambitions of activity European leadership.”

Over recent weeks the French scene has seen a lot of new investment. ESL, Vivendi and CANAL Group partnered to create new competitions and broadcasts, while the county’s biggest football club, PSG, also announced they are entering eSports by partnering with Webedia.

The loss of melty is a big blow to the growing French scene, and raises some questions regarding how beneficial big sports clubs entering the world of eSports really is.
