Microsoft in discussions to acquire Minecraft studio Mojang – report

Microsoft is reportedly in serious discussions to purchase Mojang, makers of indie game-turned-phenomenon Minecraft.

The Wall Street Journal cites a source with knowledge on the matter, claiming that if completed the acquisition would be valued at more than $2bn – approximately the same amount Facebook dropped to buy Oculus earlier this year.

According to the report, Microsoft is attempting to fast-track the potential deal and that it could be signed as early as this week.”

Both Microsoft and Mojang have declined comment on the matter to this point. Minecraft had sold nearly 54m units across all platforms as of June of this year, and just launched on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles earlier this month.
