Microsoft invests in FourSquare

Microsoft has invested in location-based social networkFourSquare to reportedly help develop the firm’s rumoured voice-activated assistant app, Cortana.

The investment was confirmed by FourSquare CEO Dennis Crowley, but no details were disclosed at the time. However, Bloomberg cities an anonymous source who claims the deal is worth $15m and was made to help power Cortana – the apparent successor to Microsoft’s current TellMe service.

It was reported back in September that Microsoft was developing the Cortana app to compete directly against Apple’s Siri service. At the time, the app was supposedly scheduled to arrive in early 2014.

Microsoft itself has yet to comment on the deal.
