Misfits Academy owner looking to sell after team’s promotion

Misfits Academy has played its last official game, after the team won promotion to the EU League of Legends Championship Series (EU LCS) on April 13.

The promotion has created a flaw for Misfits Academy, who belong to the Misfits eSports organisation, as the LCS has strict rules about multi-team ownership. The ruling from the handbook states: “In order to preserve the integrity of official League play, the Team Managers, or affiliates thereof, shall not have an interest in more than one Professional Esports Team participating in a Professional Esports League”

There are several subclauses to dictate exactly what an interest is, but in short, one person can’t own two competing teams in a top-flight League of Legends tournament.

As a result, Misfits’ owner Ben Spoont has announced that the organisation will be looking to sell off the Misfits Academy team.

By all accounts, they’re selling off a team in form. Misfits Academy is ascending to the LCS after back-to-back wins against both Giants Gaming and Fnatic Academy in the EU Challenger Series Spring Promotion Tournament. Misfits Academy took Fnatic Academy in a tense fifth game, winning a decisive teamfight to take the series 3-2.

All eyes are now on Misfits Academy ahead of the sale. As Misfits’ aren’t selling the team as an entity, but the spot they’ve taken in the LCS, the new owners could choose not to pick up some or all of the Misfits Academy players. Similarly, staff and players could be shuffled between the central team and the Academy ahead of the sale as Misfits try to put together the strongest possible side for next season.
