Modern Warfare 3 tops Japanese charts

Activision’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has achieved a rare feat for a Western-developed FPS by debuting at the top of the Japanese software charts.

The game is published by Square Enix in the region.

Andriasang reports that its week one PS3 sales reached 180,372. Although its predecessor Black Ops also claimed the No.1 spot in its first week, it did so with sales of just 128,922 on PS3.

MW3’s closest contender was Namco Bandai’s DS title One Piece Gigant Battle! 2, whose 116,062 unit sales saw it debut at No.2.

The PS3 version of THQ’s Saints Row: The Third managed fifth position in its first week with unit sales of 36,222 units while Microsoft’s Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary sold 13,106 in its first week, claiming 15th place.

Nintendo’s 3DS was again the best selling console with weekly unit sales of 96,219 – slightly down on last week’s sales of 103,962.
