Move sales on par with Kinect

Following the confirmation that Sony’s 4.1m ‘sales’ figure for Move released yesterday actually represents the number of units shipped to retail, analyst Michael Pachter has pegged actual sales numbers at 2.5m units.

That, of course, is exactly the same as the Kinect sales number released by Microsoft earlier in the week.

[Sony’s Move numbers] are still impressive,” Pachter told Eurogamer.

I understand that they sold through around one million through the end of October, and it’s reasonable that with the Japanese launch they have sold through another 1.5m in November, but I’d peg the sell through number at closer to 2.5m, or exactly on par with Kinect, albeit over a longer time frame.”

If sell-through is the 2.5m that I estimate, it’s logical that shipments would be 4.1m cumulatively, as demand in December is likely to be higher than the 1.5m I assumed were sold in November.”

Kinect has hit the same sales milestone despite having come to market close to two months after Sony’s controller.

I think that Microsoft still has an advantage at holiday, with a larger installed base of consoles, more momentum, and a slightly more unique experience,” Pachter added. I would expect Kinect to outsell Move in December.”
