New iPads sell 3m over the weekend

Apple has announced some impressive numbers for its two newest iPad SKUs over the weekend.

Combined sales of the iPad Mini and iPad 4 – both of which were launched across 34 countries last Friday – hit 3m units over the weekend.

Apple went on to point out that when compared to the launch of iPad 3 earlier this year, sales were double – although that excludes sales of the 3G iPad 3, as to date both new models are only available in Wi-Fi flavours.

How the sales were split between the two was not revealed. Estimates suggest that just under 1m iPad Mini units were available at launch.

Apple CEO Tim Cook said of the numbers: "Customers around the world love the new iPad mini and fourth generation iPad. We set a new launch weekend record and practically sold out of iPad minis. We’re working hard to build more quickly to meet the incredible demand."
