OnLive microconsole heads to retail this year

GAME is set to sell the OnLive microconsole in-store in time for Christmas.

Others retailers should begin selling the device in 2012.

It’s part of a partnership between the US cloud gaming firm and the retailer. OnLive’s microconsole will also arrive in GAME stores first. Other retailers will be able to stock the goods at a later date. The device will let buyers play OnLive without the need for a PC.

OnLive CEO Steve Perlman told MCV: There’s going to be a number of things we’re doing. Consumers will be able to play demos on GAME’s website, buy the OnLive game system in stores as well as top-up cards like XBLA and iTunes vouchers.”

GAME will also sell OnLive subscription cards before the year is out.

The news comes after OnLive launched its download service in the UK on September 22nd. Player numbers for the service – which allows users to stream and play a collection of games almost instantly online – currently stand at around ten times what was projected.

The firm previously told MCV it has already amassed ‘millions’ of users in the UK.
