Firm seeking feedback for innovative texture compression technique

ARM releases ASTC codec on GitHub

Graphics and technology firm ARM has made the evaluation codec for its ASTC technology available on GitHub.

ASTC stands for Adaptive Scalable Texture Compression, a new technique devises by ARM and AMD. It’s an official extension to both the OpenGL and OpenGL ES graphics APIs and is designed to help devs get higher quality textures into their mobile and browser games without increasing the memory bandwidth required.

The technology is free to use and supported by many hardware firms and widely-used games tools, include Unreal Engine 4 and Unity 4.3.

Developers creating their own engine will also be able to clone the GitHub repository and integrate ASTC into their own tech.

ARM has released ASTC on GitHub in order to make it easier for devs to access and browse the tech, as well as contribute feedback. You can find out more via ARM’s website.
