DayZ dev Dean Hall: ‘I would love to make mods for Grand Theft Auto’

The developer behind highly successful open-world zombie MMO DayZ has said he would love to create his own content for Grand Theft Auto.

Discussing the addition of paid mods by Valve to its Steam Workshop content marketplace, Dean Hall expressed his desire to see bigger studios offer access to their code to users for the sake of incubating custom content.

I really hope it opens the eyes of Rockstar and DICE, and encourages them to open Battlefield and Grand Theft Auto up to modders,” he said.

They should make tools, provide better access, and then sit back and let the creativity flow.

I would, personally, love to make mods for Grand Theft Auto and would be more than happy with a similar revenue split as offered by Bethesda [where 25 per cent of the mod’s cost goes to the creator].

I would, however, expect the same level of access and support.”

Hall was speaking before the recent U-turn by Valve and Bethesda, which saw support for paid modding removed.

It’s clear we didn’t understand exactly what we were doing,” Valve admitted in a lengthy statement about the reversal.

Bethesda added: Even though we had the best intentions, the feedback has been clear – this is not a feature you want.”
