Disney abandons Star Wars: Attack Squadron

Star Wars: Attack Squadron has been abandoned by Disney just four months after entering closed beta.

The Area 52 developed free-to-play title offered 16-player online dogfights and the ability to customise iconic craft such as the X-Wing and Tie-Fighter.

It was in development outside of EA’s exclusive Star Wars game licensing deal which covers only titles for the core audience”.

We want to thank all of the fans who participated in the closed beta of Star Wars: Attack Squadrons,” Disney said. After much consideration, we have decided to cease development so that we can focus on other Star Wars game experiences. We truly appreciate the time you spent engaging in the beta.”

Disney acquired LucasFIlm and the rights to the Star Wars universe in October 2012, confirming Episode VII in the process. In April the following year LucasArts was killed off, ending in-house game development in favour of licensing out its rich IPs to third parties.

Last month it was revealed that all Star Wars games to date have been robbed of their canon status.
