Valve becomes supporting member of The Linux Foundation

Valve has joined non-profit group The Linux Foundation as part of its ongoing investment into the budding OS as a gaming platform.

"Joining the Linux Foundation is one of many ways Valve is investing in the advancement of Linux gaming," Valve’s Mike Sartain said.

"Through these efforts we hope to contribute tools for developers building new experiences on Linux, compel hardware manufacturers to prioritise support for Linux, and ultimately deliver an elegant and open platform for Linux users."

Valve’s support of the foundation is no surprise, given how the firm has recently adopted Linux for both the Steam platform and its hardware ambitions.

"Our membership continues to grow as both new and mature entities embrace community development and open technologies," Linux Foundation COO Mike Woster said.

"Our new members believe Linux is a strategic investment that allows their markets to evolve as quickly as possibly to achieve long-term viability and competitiveness."

The move happens to be one of several Valve has made over the past year that will end up directly challenging Microsoft’s well-established Windows OS.
