Valve confirms Steam hacker attack

Valve has confirmed rumours circulating earlier this week that hackers have compromised the Steam network and, most worryingly, a database of information and personal data was compromised.

A plundered Steam database, managed by games giant Valve, contains information including user names, hashed and salted passwords, game purchases, email addresses, billing addresses and encrypted credit card data.

The attack likely occurred on Sunday, November 6th, when it was discovered that the Steam forums had been breached.

We began investigating and found that the intrusion goes beyond the Steam forums,” Newell explained in a massage to the media. We do not have evidence that encrypted credit card numbers or personally identifying information were taken by the intruders, or that the protection on credit card numbers or passwords was cracked. We are still investigating."
