PS4 back on top in US in May

Sony’s PS4 reclaimed the title of best-selling console in the US last month, NPD data has revealed.

That’s despite Xbox One’s sales climbing 81 per cent year-on-year, a number no doubt helped by the fact that Microsoft’s machine is now considerably cheaper than it was this time last year. However, while Xbox One topped the hardware charts in April that is so far the only month this year it has managed to beat PS4.

The region’s overall hardware sales were largely flat, falling one per cent compared to May 2014.

PS4 continues to be the cumulative sales leader in the US and globally with more than 20m consoles already in the market,” Sony told VentureBeat.

Physical game sales were down 13 per cent in May at $507.6m. This was blamed on May 2014’s strong release schedule, which featured Mario Kart 8 and Watch Dogs.

Witcher 3 was the best selling title, followed by Mortal Kombat X, GTA V, Minecraft and new Nintendo IP Splatoon.
