PS4 has sold over 40m units globally

Sony’s PS4 shows no signs of letting up, with the firm announcing that it has sold 40m consoles.

This announcement comes by way of the new PlayStation-focused Sony Interactive Entertainment division, and reveals that as of May 22nd 2016, more than 40m PS4s have been shifted worldwide.

This figure was alluded to in April after Sony revealed it had sold 17.7m PS4s during the 2016 financial year.

That’s on top of 270.9m games sold both physically and digitally.

The platform holder announced yesterday (Wednesday, May 25th) that it believes it can sell a further 20m units globally in the coming financial year.

In the UK, PS4 is the only console so far this year to see a sales growth, with 6.7 per cent more units sold in 2016 than 2015 thus far.

We are truly grateful for the enormous support from our fans and partners across the globe, which helped us achieve this significant milestone in such a short span of time,” said SIE president and global CEO Andrew House.

We will strive to deliver even more exciting gaming experiences to our users, further driving the momentum and accelerating the expansion of the PS4 platform and its business this fiscal year by offering an unparalleled line-up of games, bringing our virtual reality system, PlayStation VR, to market and providing ground-breaking features and network services.”
