Japanese localisation pays off for leading mobile developer

Clash of Clans muscles into top ten on Japan App Store

Supercell’s free-to-play smash hit Clash of Clans has made its way to number two in the iPad top grossing charts in Japan.

Behind only GungHo’s runaway success Puzzle & Dragons, the title has also muscled its way to tenth spot in the highest grossing iPhone apps chart.

Last month Clash of Clans was localised for Japanese users with a complete in-game translation.

Supercell’s big push into the Japan market has also seen it form a special collaboration with GungHo to advertise its flagship game in Puzzle & Dragons, with newly added content such as themed dungeons and monsters.

Clash of Clans is also currently being advertised prominently on the Japan App Store, featured as new and noteworthy.

So far Supercell has experienced huge success outside of the Japanese market, generating $2.4 million a day as of April.

Despite becoming one of the world’s top mobile developers however, the Finnish company will be hoping to emulate GungHo’s success in Japan, where the developer is currently raking in nearly $4 million a day from Puzzle & Dragons.

Supercell has been nominated for the New IP and Independent Studio accolades at next week’s Develop Awards.
