Co-creator of Amiga 1000, Atari Lynx and 3DO, Dave Needle, passes away

The man who helped invent some of the most recognisable systems of the 1980s and 1990s has died.

Dave Needle played a major role in the completion of the Lorraine project, which resulted in the creation of the Amiga 1000, and served as one of the lead engineers who created the Amiga’s custom chips.

Needle went on to co-invent the first handheld games console with a colour LCD display, the Atari Lynx, in 1989.

In the 1990s, Needle was one half (along with RJ Mical) of the core partnership behind the 3DO Interactive Multiplayer console – better known as just the ‘3DO’ – as well as vice president of the games firm.

Needle passed away on Saturday, February 20th. His death was announced on social media by the team behind the Atari History Book. No cause was given.
