Gearbox details Battleborn’s microtransactions

A new premium currency is being introduced to Battleborn.

Platinum will allow players to buy new skins and taunts for heroes – so, only cosmetic items, and not in-game perks. It’s not yet clear whether the items can only be purchased with cash or can also be earned in game.

The first wave of cosmetic add-ons includes skins for all 26 heroes and taunts for Ghalt, Oscar Mike, Benedict, Shayne & Aurox, El Dragon, Whiskey Foxtrot, Kleese, and Alani, with more to come in future updates,” a post on the forums said.

What they’ve hear so far will not encourage them. The reaction from fans has – shock! – been pretty hostile. Although Gearbox has added that the update will roll out alongside a host of in-game improvements, and that more details will be shared tonight.

Neither 2K nor Gearbox have released any official information about Battleborn’s sales, but suffice to say the performance has fallen short of many expectations. The early struggles are likely all the tougher to take considering the phenomenal success of Blizzard’s genre rival Overwatch – which launched with its own premium currency microtransactions, incidentally, which can be either purchased with cash or earned in-game.
