Gillen leaves the games industry

One of the most recognisable and respected writers in global games journalism has confirmed that is to leave the industry as of today.

Kieron Gillen is one of the founders of popular PC games site Rock Paper Shotgun. His work has also appeared on the likes of Edge, Eurogamer, PC Gamer, Wired and The Guardian. And in MCV, of course.

He is perhaps best known for his manifesto on New Games Journalism which outlined a new way in which writers can approach games reviews, centring on the author’s individual experience of the title.

Gillen also drew praise from further a field, and was singled out for praise by (former games journalist) Charlie Brooker in an interview with MCV in 2009.

He departs after signing a contract with Marvel, for whom he has written comics for some time.

These fifteen years have been a pleasure,” he stated on RPS. This hasn’t been a sudden thing. With the contract signed [with Marvel] I felt it important to give my full, undivided and primary attention to the comic-writing.

While I’m not on the regular staff I’ll remain a director of RPS, so be involved in shaping the site’s future. More importantly, I remain a gamer whose main response the medium is going on big rants. When I decide I want to write ten thousand words on an indie strategy game no-one else gives a toss about, there’s not a power in the world that can stop me.”
