Development experts to offer advice and guidance to students over the next four months

Make Something Unreal Live names dev mentors

Splash Damage, Ninja Theory, Lucid Games and Climax Studios have been named as mentors for next year’s Make Something Unreal Live contest.

The European studios will be lending their support to the four finalists in the development competition, offering advice and guidance to contestants as they complete the final stretch of their game development.

Although the developers from each studio will help provide knowledge for the teams to overcome various development issues and give general guidance, they will not be working directly with the young developers.

The four finalists were selected from a shortlist of 12 teams after a day-long semi-final before a panel of judges.

The four finalists are Dead Shark Triplepunch of Blekinge Institute of Technology, Kairos Games of Staffordshire University, Static Games of Bournemouth University and Team Summit of University of Abertay.

The teams are developing titles using the Unreal Development Kit over the next four months, and must base their games around the theme of ‘Mendelian Inheritance: genetics and genomics’. The teams are also being supported by tool outfit Allegorithmic, which is providing full licences of its Substance Designer texturing solution for all finalists.

The contest’s deadline coincides with consumer expo The Gadget Show Live, where finalists will work on their games live on the show floor in front of the MSUL judges and the public visitors to the show.

Winners of the competition will receive a full source Unreal Engine 4 licence for PC digital distribution.

“It’s great to have world-class studios giving their time to help ensure that the contestants maximise the potential of their games at Make Something Unreal Live,” said Epic Games European territory manager Mike Gamble.

“Our finalists have already achieved a very high standard in their pitches and pre-production work, and we’re all looking forward to see how far they can take their games in the next four months.”
