Microsoft chief software man quits

Microsoft shares fell by over 2 per cent on news that its chief software architect, Ray Ozzie, has decided to resign from the group.

Ozzie was a key player at the upper echelons of Microsoft, and took over the company’s software role after Bill Gates retired from the group.

He was also central in directing Microsoft into the new landscape of cloud computing.

News of the departure was leaked publicly through an internal Microsoft email, penned by current CEO Steve Ballmer.

Said Ballmer: “With our progress in services and the cloud now full speed ahead in all aspects of our business, Ray and I are announcing today Ray’s intention to step down from his role as chief software architect," said Mr Ballmer in his email.

Ozzie will remain in his role at Microsoft during a transitional period, Ballmer’s email read.

The vacancy Ozzie will leave will not be filled, Microsoft said.
