Microsoft closing Games for Windows Live marketplace

Microsoft will shut down Games for Windows Live and cease selling products through the PC games marketplace, the firm has announced.

The company confirmed the news on the Games for Windows Live Facebook page, adding that users will still be able to download and play games through the Games for Windows Live client.

As part of the upcoming Xbox 360 system update, Microsoft Points will be retired, and the Xbox.com PC marketplace will be closed as of August 22, 2013,” a Microsoft spokesperson wrote.

We encourage you to spend your Microsoft Points balance prior to this change. Although you will not be able to purchase new games, you can continue to enjoy previously purchased content by downloading them through the Games for Windows LIVE client software as usual.”

The update is the same patch that will retire Microsoft Points for local currency, and takes place following word that former Valve business director Jason Holtman has joined Microsoft to focus on improving its Windows platform.
